Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve
One of the first dark-sky preserves in the world, with rock barrens and some of the darkest skies near Toronto.
Designated in 1999, Torrance Barrens is a low expanse of exposed Canadian Shield rock and shallow wetlands between Bala and Gravenhurst. With no lighting and no facilities, it is one of the best places in southern Ontario to see the Milky Way, meteor showers and, occasionally, the northern lights. Trails are informal and rocky, so bring a red torch, dress warmly and know the way back to the car. Go on a clear, moonless night and let your eyes adjust for 20 minutes.
