Big Chute Marine Railway
The Trent-Severn Waterway's famous marine railway, where whole boats ride a cradle up and over the rocks.
At Big Chute, boats do not lock through. They are floated onto a rail cradle that carries them up and over the rocky ridge between two levels of the Severn River, then sets them back in the water. It is the only marine railway of its kind left on the waterway and one of the most photographed spots in the region. Viewing platforms let you watch the whole operation from the side. Visitor services are seasonal, so check the waterway's own schedule before making the drive.
