Butter tarts, breweries and bakeries: a Muskoka food crawl

Butter tarts in Bala, a taproom near Torrance and a cranberry marsh in autumn: a three-stop crawl through Muskoka's local food.

Muskoka's food story is not one restaurant. It is a bakery queue at nine in the morning, a local taproom, and a farm that turned a cranberry marsh into a reason to drive to Bala in October.

This is a crawl, not a schedule. Pick three stops and leave room to sit still.

Start with the butter tarts

Bala has been a summer village for generations, and Don's Bakery is the reason a lot of people stop here at all. Go early. On a weekend morning the queue tells you everything about the reputation, and by mid-afternoon the trays are thinner than you would like.

Take the pastry down to the falls, where Lake Muskoka narrows into the Moon River, and eat it standing up like everyone else.

Then a local brewery

A short drive from Bala, Clear Lake Brewing in Torrance pours its own beer and makes a relaxed stop between the lakes and the Torrance Barrens.

If you are heading elsewhere, Lake of Bays Brewing began in Baysville, Muskoka Brewery is in Bracebridge, and Sawdust City Brewing is in Gravenhurst, each a taproom that grew out of its town.

Finish with the cranberry marsh

Cranberry growing around Bala is genuine local agriculture, not a theme. Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery, home of Johnston's Cranberries, runs marsh tours and makes fruit wines; in autumn, when the bogs are flooded for harvest and turn red, it becomes one of the region's signature sights.

Eat where the road makes you slow down. The best stops in Muskoka are almost always the ones with a queue of locals.

Practical notes

  • Hours shorten outside July and August. Check before you build a day around one stop.
  • Some kitchens close between lunch and dinner; plan a late lunch instead of a late afternoon.
  • Book dinner in the bigger towns on summer Saturdays and through the autumn colour weekends.
