Dark skies over Torrance Barrens: how to plan a stargazing night

How to plan a night under one of Ontario's darkest skies: timing, what to bring, and how to behave in a protected preserve.

About two hours north of Toronto, in a stretch of open rock and scrubby pine near the village of Torrance, the sky gets properly dark. The Torrance Barrens was designated in 1999 as one of Canada's first dark-sky preserves, and on a clear, moonless night the Milky Way runs overhead in a way most visitors have never seen it.

Why this place works

The Barrens are open, low and rocky, with long sightlines in every direction and very little light nearby. That combination makes the preserve useful for stargazing and genuinely strange to walk through in daylight: bare bedrock, stunted pines, small wetlands between the ridges.

Planning the night

  • Check the moon. A bright moon washes out everything faint. The darkest nights sit either side of a new moon.
  • Check the cloud forecast on the day, not the week before.
  • Arrive before sunset. The access road and the parking area are easy to miss after dark, and you want to see where you are stepping.
  • Bring a red torch. White light ruins everyone's night vision, including yours.

What to bring

A warm layer even in summer, since the rock loses heat quickly; insect repellent in June and July; something to sit on; and a star app you have already downloaded, because the signal out here is unreliable.

The longer you stay in the dark, the more you see. Give your eyes twenty minutes and the sky stops being black.

Etiquette and rules

The Barrens are a protected area, not a car park with a view. Stay on the paths and the rock, keep lights low after dark, take everything out with you, and respect anyone who has set up a telescope. Fires and camping are not part of a night out here.

If the weather closes in, Clear Lake Brewing in Torrance is a reasonable consolation prize.
