Bracebridge in the snow: the Festival of Lights and where to shop

The lights are the reason to come, but the shops, the falls and an early dinner are what make the evening work.

Bracebridge's Festival of Lights turns the town into an evening destination in late November and early December: shop windows lit, streets busy, and a programme that runs from moonlight shopping to fireworks and the Santa Claus Parade.

Plan around the evening, not the day

The lights are the point. Arrive in the afternoon, walk the falls and Manitoba Street while there is still daylight, eat early, then stay out after dark when the town is at its best. Midweek evenings are noticeably calmer than the opening weekend.

Read our full Festival of Lights guide for the programme and timings.

Where to shop

Manitoba Street is the centre of it, and the independents are the reason to come. Clothing, gifts, books and food all sit within a couple of blocks, and the local labels are the ones worth carrying home.

  • Start at the falls and walk north along the main street
  • Allow time for the shops rather than treating them as a corridor
  • Book dinner ahead on the busiest evenings

Around town

Bracebridge Falls is at the centre of everything and worth seeing in the low light. For a longer leg stretch, High Falls is a few minutes north with a short trail along the river.

Winter changes the town's pace rather than stopping it. The good version of a Bracebridge evening ends with cold hands and a warm table.

Practical notes

  • Check the current programme before travelling; events and timings change year to year.
  • Dress for standing outside in the evening, and bring a torch for the walk back to the car.
  • Rooms in town fill for the opening weekend, so book early.
